Request a virtual private server

Currently our facilities are at full capacity.  We hope to be able to accommodate requests for virtual private servers by December 1, 2007.  In the meantime, please submit this form and we'll respond to your inquiry as soon as possible.

We use the 95th-percentile method of measuring bandwidth utilization for billing purposes, because that's how our provider bills us. While translating to another method for billing purposes might be profitable, our mission is to provide the best value for our members.

An introduction to 95% billing can be found here.

While the "95%" method and the volume-accounting standards of bandwidth measurement do not directly translate between each other, we can nonetheless use it as a guide when comparing colocation costs.

The calculations below can help to translate the per-GB-transferred measurement common with single-site/single-server hosting plans into the 95th percentile measurement commonly used in higher-end colocation and network bandwidth contracts.

64 kilobits(Kb) transferred per second * 60 seconds = 480 kilobytes(KB) transferred per minute

480KBytes per minute * 60 minutes = 28.125 megabytes(MB) transferred per hour

28.125MB per hour * 24 hours = 675MB per day

675MB per day * 30 days = 19.775 gigabytes (GB) per month

roughly translates to 64Kbits/s@95% = 19.78GBytes per month, or 128Kbits/s@95% = 39.56GBytes per month

FYI, the Google Calculator is reasonably good with units such as 'kilobits' vs 'kilobytes'.

Paravirtualization (PVM) is the recommended method, as it provides the best performance. However, in our environment this method restricts you to Linux and requires you to run a kernel provided by Cernio.

Hardware virtualization (HVM) allows you to run other operating systems and/or your own kernel, at the expense of slightly lower performance.

At the present time, HVMs are unavailable while we work out a bug or two. However, we plan to support HVMs equally with PVMs. If you choose a PVM now, we can almost certainly migrate you to an HVM later.

Your SSH key will be used for logins to the server & your management shell.

Alternatively, your GPG key will be used to exchange passwords if you should choose not to use SSH public keys.

If you'd like to use both or a couple of each, please upload a .tar or .zip file containing all of them. Please also give us guidance in the comments as to how we should use them.

Please do *not* give us, or anyone, your private key!

If you're using Paypal, please send to billing@cernio.com and add 5% to cover transaction costs.

If you're mailing a cheque or money order, please send to the closest address listed on our contact page.
