This is a guide to software that we at Cernio have found to be worthwhile. The contents of this page may be inaccurate, incomplete, and/or out of date. No warranty or other guarantee is expressed nor implied. Use at your own risk. Back up all data on a regular basis - especially before performing software installations or other modifications.

E-mail

  • Thunderbird
    Free; open-source; standards-compliant; secure; reliable; actively being improved all the time
    Supports IMAP over SSL, POP3 over SSL, and SMTP-AUTH over TLS
    Available for MacOS X, Linux, and Windows
  • Evolution
    Free to download; also included in paid Novell Desktop software.
    Open source. Excellent interface. Actively being improved all the time.
    Supports IMAP over SSL, POP3 over SSL, and SMTP-AUTH over TLS
    Primarily for Linux, but it can be used under MacOS X as well.
  • Microsoft Outlook Express
    Not recommended!
  • Microsoft Outlook
    Deviates significantly from industry standards; unreliable; history of serious security problems. Includes impressive calendar and to-do list functionality.
    Supports IMAP over SSL, POP3 over SSL, and SMTP-AUTH over port 465
    Only for Microsoft Windows.
    Use only if you must have the calendar and to-do list functionality.


Web Browsing

  • Firefox
    Free; open-source; standards-compliant; secure; reliable; actively being improved all the time
    Available for MacOS X, Linux, and Windows
  • FlashBlock for Firefox
    A plugin for Firefox that disables Flash animations on a web page until you click on the 'play' icon for each blocked animation. Works well to quiet obnoxious advertising.
  • AdBlock for Firefox
    A powerful plugin for Firefox that allows you to selectively block various elements of web pages. Especially useful for blocking ads of all kinds.
  • Opera
    Standards-compliant; secure; reliable; under active development
    Freely available
    Available for MacOS X, Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, OS/2, QNX, mobile phones, and Windows


File Transfer

  • Fugu
    Graphical SCP/SFTP secure file transfer tool for MacOS X
    Free; open-source; in active development
    Doesn't handle sub-directories gracefully, but is otherwise good.
  • FileZilla
    Graphical SFTP/FTP file transfer tool for Windows
    Free; open-source; in active development
  • WinSCP
    Graphical SFTP/FTP file transfer tool for Windows
    Free; open-source; in active development
    Recommended - slightly better than FileZilla


Anti-Spam

  • POPFile
    Supplemental end-user spam filtering utility.
    Free; open-source; in active development
    Can help you minimize spam by teaching POPFile which of your messages are spam and which aren't.
    Mostly for Windows, but can be made to work on other platforms as well.


Anti-Spyware

(Spyware is only a concern on Windows. For the best protection, buy a Mac or install Linux.)
  • Ad-Aware
    Very effective anti-spyware software. Paid version includes preventive mechanisms.
    Good user interface.
    "SE Personal Edition" is free for personal use
  • Spybot Search and Destroy
    A good supplement to Ad-Aware.
    Mediocre user interface, but it works better than it looks.
    Only one version, and it's free.

Anti-Virus

(While computer viruses are a serious problem on Windows, they are almost a non-issue on MacOS X. For the best protection, buy a Mac or install Linux.)
  • GRISoft AVG
    Versions available for professional and home use.
    Good user interface. Cheaper than Symantec and McAfee, and yet it works well.
    If you use the home version, be sure to turn off its e-mail "certification" if you don't want their ads in your e-mail.

Various

Things that don't easily fit in any one of the above categories.
  • TreeSize
    A tool to manage hard disk usage on Windows. Helps you figure out where your disk space is going.
    Free (limited functionality) and paid (fully functional) versions are both available.
  • OpenOffice
    A functional, reliable, and free alternative to Microsoft Office. Includes word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, illustration, and database functionality.
    Available for MacOS X, Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, and Windows.
    Highly recommended.
  • TheOpenCD
    A smart collection of useful and fun open-source (free) applications, utilities, and distractions for Windows.
    Highly recommended.
